Restoration of Iraq's Iconic al Nuri Mosque Begins

Ceremony has taken place to lay the cornerstone for the project

Following years of destruction caused by Islamic State occupation, Iraq's northern city of Mosul demonstrated a major sign of its recovery with a ceremony to mark the beginning of reconstruction work of the iconic al-Nuri mosque.

Plans to rebuild the Great Mosque were initially announced in April this year, with the United Arab Emirates contributing over $50 million towards the project, which is expected to create thousands of job opportunities for young Iraqi graduates from both Mosul and Baghdad.

Since Mosul was recaptured by Iraqi forces in 2017, UNESCO has prioritized the rebuilding of the mosque as part of the city's reconstruction, however further projects include restoration of the city's market, a temple, two churches and the university's central library.
