Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani attended a ground breaking ceremony for the Erbil ring road project.
Speaking at the ceremony Barzani revealed the 150 metre ring road project will improve transportation links and reduce congestion on routes within and through the City area.
The project is one of many which have been on hold following the economic downturn and war against IS which has affected the area since 2014. Barzani revealed that many similar projects would have been completed in all major communities of the Kurdistan region by now had it not been for the hardships over the last few years.
The first stage of the project involves the section running from Koya road to Bahirka road, which is 14km in length and expected to cost $131 million. The project will be financed by the Hemin Group who will implement this on deferred payment. The high speed road will also include a service road, three bridges and three underpasses.
The Hemin Group will also implement a 14km stretch of road connecting Erbil and Gopal.
