Siemens have secured a new contract with China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) to upgrade the Shatt Al Basra Gas Power Plant by 650 megawatts (MW).
Five steam turbines will be supplied by Siemens to increase current power generation of 1,250 MW by over 50%, in order to supply up to 1 million Iraqi's with clean and reliable electricity. The use of steam turbines ensures that no additional fuel supply is required to generate the electricity increase.
Siemens have already secured a similar project this year with Rumalia plant to supply two steam turbines which will boost power generation by 700 MW, with both upgrade projects expected to be completed in 2020.
Siemens continue to invest in the Iraq market place following the affirmation of their commitment to the country at February's Iraq reconstruction conference in Kuwait.
