Iraqi Minister of Transport Kazem Finjan al-Hamami has revealed plans to construct a dam on the Shatt al-Arab River in participation with Iran to help alleviate the water crisis affecting both countries.
Following a recent lack of drinking water, officials in Basra have asked the Iranian government to prevent water flowing into Iraqi territory, as this causes an increase in the salinity of the Shatt al-Arab River. The construction of a new dam will prevent Iranian salt water entering the Shatt al-Arab to enable a better supply of water for both drinking and irrigation.
Technicians from the University of Basra and consultancy firms have now began work on a feasibility study for the project.
