Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has nominated Nizar Saleem Numan as Iraq's new Minister of Oil, a formally trained geologist from Kurdistan. Mr. Numan facilitate Baghdad negotiate the dispute between themselves and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). Mr. Numan has said he is, "hopeful the differences could be resolved." Mr. Numan previously worked as a consultant in Iraq and northern Kurdistan.
The details of the disagreement between KRG and central Iraq mean that 550,000 barrels a day would be produced and transferred to Iraq from Kurdistan in exchange for 17% of Baghdad's federal budget.
Kurdistan is currently exporting oil independently from central Iraq and have also stopped receiving government funding.
