Chinese firms will construct a "Science City" in the northern Nineveh Governorate of Iraq as part of an oil-for-projects arrangement, as per reports by official news agency Alsabah.

The project will include swimming pools, shopping malls, playgrounds and other amenities.

According to the president of Hamdaniya University, Ukail Al-Araji, preparation are already underway for the 21.5 hectare site of the project dubbed as the largest of its kind in Iraq.

He also noted that the project will be carried out under the oil-for-projects agreement with China, and has been approved by the relevant authorities.

The report did not specify the cost of the project as well as which Chinese firms are involved.

Iraq and China agreed to an oil-for-projects arrangement in September 2019, although no projects were mentioned at the time.
