A senior Turkish ambassador recently stated that his country supports Iraq's grandiose Al-Faw railway project, which will connect the southern Iraqi port city to Europe.
On Monday, Turkish Consul General to Basra Mehmet Ozkun informed the Iraqi News Agency of Turkey's support for the project and sees it as a beneficial endeavor.
The development is part of the $7 billion Grand Al-Faw Port project, which is being designed by an Italian company. Additionally, the breakwater was completed by South Korea's Daewoo Engineering & Construction.
The mega port project is expected to drastically reduce the time it takes for ships to move products between continents. Sources familiar with the project claimed that it will also provide significant non-oil income for Baghdad.
The Turkish diplomat also stated their country's intent to discuss the essential route with Iraq, as per reports by the state media.
The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the German railway company Deutsche Bahn signed a memorandum of agreement in early February to lay the route's infrastructure in the Kurdistan Region.
The Italian firm is presently undertaking feasibility studies for the project.
