France's TotalEnergies SE has been given the go signal to develop a natural-gas field within Iraq in what is known as the Ratawi field. The goal of the project is to help Iraq boost their oil output.
The French company expects to capture and process 600 million standard cubic feet a day of gas from the Ratawi field This was according to the Iraq News Agency which based the information from a government spokesman.
Aside from this Total will also be constructing a 1,000 megawatt solar power plant and begin work on a seawater-injection project that targets increasing oil output from the southern fields.
These projects had been signed under an initial agreement in March with Total but had to wait for the cabinet's approval.
Iraq has been ramping up on their gas production in order to reduce their dependence on imports from Iran.
