U.S. Extends Iraq's Trade with Iran for Energy but Emphasize that Baghdad Seek Alternative Solutions

The United States granted Iraq to import Iranian gas in return for access to power grid with a three month deadline. The U.S. extended the trade but emphasized that Baghdad seek alternative sources.

The United States granted Iraq to import Iranian gas in return for access to power grid with a three month deadline. The U.S. extended the trade but emphasized that Baghdad seek alternative sources.


The U.S. had reinstated the sanction on Iranian oil in November of 2018 in efforts to try and leverage Iranian influence in the Middle East. Although Iraqi officials express that they might need years to become completely independent of outsourced energy.  As U.S. energy company General Electric is becomes central to a U.S. lobby for the company to rebuild Iraq's electricity system.
