Construction Begins at US Consulate in Erbil

Ceremony to mark the new building attended by Barzani and Silliman

Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani and US Ambassador to Iraq Douglas Silliman teamed up to attend a ceremony to mark the beginning of construction of the new US Consulate building in Erbil.

Barzani commented that the project demonstrates that "America wants to stay in Iraq, America wants to remain in Kurdistan and America wants to develop its ties", while Silliman declared the new building as a “strong symbol of the continued strong relationship between the United States and the Kurdistan Region for decades in the future.”

The new complex will be the largest US Consulate worldwide, consisting of modern facilities and built on 200,000 square meters of land with a budget of $600 million.

This project follows the largest and most expensive embassy in the world built by the US in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad in 2009 at a cost of $750 million.

It is expected the new Consulate will take 4 years to construct.
