Mr. Jabbar Ali Al-Luiebi the minister of oil confirmed on the keenness of the ministry to execute the strategic programs which can contribute in the development of the oil fields and provide more power to be used in the operation of the fields.
Mr. Al-Luiebi opened the Rumaila power station which can produce 235 megawatts/ day.
Mr. Al-Luiebi said that Rumaila field represents a giant oil producer among 10 large oil fields. It is also considered as the highest producing field in Iraq and Basrah oil company, so that it must be equipped with all the necessary requirements to develop its production.
Mr. Al-Luiebi said also: “we are celebrating today together the opening of the 235 megawatts Rumaila power station which will cover the real need for power in Rumaila field and considered as a new achievement that can be added to the previous achievements, which will effect positively on the development of the field”. He said also that the project is considered as one of the largest projects organized by the Rumaila Field Operation Authority which includes Basrah Oil Company, BP Company and PetroChina Company. This project generates power by operating 5 gas turbines that can guarantee self-sufficiency of power. The station will be supplied by gas via the investment of flare gas which is associated with the oil operations to reduce the gas waist and provide clean energy to keep the environment clean and reduce pollution.
Mr. Al-Luiebi said that the project provided (500) jobs for the Iraqi people and it will provide more money by saving the electricity. He also praised the efforts of CPECC Chinese Company which supervised the execution of the project. He also demanded them to finish the residential complexes for the employees, as well as the recreational places and sports grounds. In addition to the rehabilitation of two schools, improving the services to the people and paving the roads.
Mr. Michael Townsend the CEO of BP in Iraq praised the cooperation of the ministry to develop the Rumaila field and said that his company is keen to execute the agreed program with the ministry to develop the field and add vital facilities equipped with new technology “such as this new station that can provide power to the field and use the surplus power to feed the national network”.
Mr. Assim Jihad the spokesman of the ministry of oil said that the station is considered as the largest one of its kind. Executed by Rumaila operation authority since its foundation. The station will also use the associated gas to operate the turbines and generate power, which can achieve self-sufficiency and generate 235 megawatts of power.
It is worthy to say that the produced power can cover the needs of 23,000 families in Basrah for electricity.
