Basra/ Iraq TradeLink: The local government here warned the foreign oil companies to "finalize the social benefits dossier within one week, otherwise they will face unpleasant consequences".
Basra governor, Majid al-Nasrawi, stated, in a press conference, that Basra should get 5 million dollars from every oil company that undertakes developing an oilfield as social benefits to be paid to develop the services in the areas near the oilfields.
He pointed that some of the oil companies refrained from paying this amount to the local government, but entrusted the projects to contractors with high costs.
"We totally reject these projects", Nasrawi confirmed.
"The foreign companies should have these amounts to Southern Oil Company within one week's time", he added.
"If the foreign companies did not comply, they will meet unpleasant consequences, so we warn them of not cooperating with the local government", Basra governor warned.
"These amounts are compensations for the damages of the foreign companies", he added.
On the other hand, Governor Nasrawi threatened to "deduct" these amounts by the Iraqi oil ministry.
No comment was made by the Iraqi oil ministry.
