Copperchase, U.K. Firm, Contracted to Build Mid Euphrates Airport in Karbala

Karbala hosts millions of pilgrims each year and Governor of Karbala Ageel al-Tuhaihi said a local airport is a necessity.

U.K. based firm, Copperchase, has been awarded a US$500 million project to build a new Mid-Euphrates Airport and will be built 20 miles (35 kilometres) south of Karbala. 

The British company has partnered with Khayrat al-Sibtein company which owns the Imam Hussein Shrine. 

Karbala hosts millions of pilgrims each year and Governor of Karbala Ageel al-Tuhaihi said a local airport is a necessity. 

The first flights are expected to depart in approximately 18-months after the initial phase of the project, the runway begins, followed by the passenger terminal, car park and maintenance facility.
