Iraqi Railways Planning Railroad Between Iraq and Iran

A number of international companies submitted their bids.

Iraqi Railways announced the project to connect Iran with Iraq, pointing that a number of international companies submitted their bids.

The railway line shall extend from Basra to Shalamcha border outlet near Iran.

The length of the railway line is expected to be 32 kilometers, that will help the travel of Iranian  visitors to Iraqi holy shrines in mid of the country, after being connected with an internal railway line.

Thousands of Iranian visitors to Iraqi holy shrines in different parts of the country are pouring on a weekly bases, in addition to visitors from other Arab Gulf countries and east Asia.

Iraqi railways suffer many complexities due to maintenance needs and the previous wars in the last century.

The first railway administration was formed by the British occupation in September, 1916.
