Construction of a protective wall around Baghdad began on February 1st led by five teams of Iraqi engineers . The wall around the capital is intended to protect the inhabitants of the city from the northern and western parts, however, some believe it will also isolate the the city from the rest of the country. While there are a stream of reports indicating various heights and perimeters of the wall, Lieutenant General of Baghdad Operations Command, Abdul al-Sumaria said on February 3rd that concrete barriers will be used to construct a wall that will be 3-7 meters high and an apparent 2 meter trench surrounding it.
More details on the plans for the wall reveal it will stretch 300 kilometers and also feature security control towers spaced out regularly across the 186 miles of the wall.
With the intent to create a 'Green Zone' for international embassies and government headquarters, the wall is intended to eliminate threats, yet the Sunni Union of Nationalist Forces insist the wall will go beyond the Baghdad's borders and pass through private farms and other Iraqi cities.
